What is Quant, and what does QNT actually do?

A full explanation of the company, the Overledger gateway, the token's job, who uses it, and the things Quant is routinely mistaken for.

How a transaction travels through Quant

Your application

A payments engine, a treasury system or a developer's app. It speaks REST and JSON and knows nothing about block formats, gas or consensus rules.

Quant calls applications that use several ledgers at once mDApps, multi-DLT applications that are not bound to a single chain.

Key takeaways

  • Quant is a London software company whose product, Overledger, is an API gateway that lets one application read from and write to many blockchains.
  • QNT is its ERC-20 utility token on Ethereum: it pays for Overledger licences and, since June 2026, acts as gas and staking collateral on the Fusion rollup.
  • Quant is not a blockchain, QNT cannot be mined, and the project has no connection to the Gen Z Quant meme coin or to Quantinuum's QNT stock.
  • Real users include UK Finance's tokenised deposit pilot, The Clearing House, Murex and Dentsu Soken; none of those contracts obliges banks to hold QNT.

The short answer

Quant is the name of a company, Quant Network Ltd, and of the ecosystem around its main product, Overledger. QNT is the token that pays for that product. When someone asks "what is Quant coin", the honest reply is that it is a licence token for enterprise interoperability software, issued on Ethereum in 2018, with a fixed supply of 14,612,493.

That sounds dry next to the usual crypto pitch, and that is the point. Quant never set out to build a faster chain or a new form of money. It set out to let banks and businesses use whichever ledgers already exist without rebuilding their systems for each one. The hub page gives the overview; this page goes deeper into mechanics, users and misconceptions.

What Quant does

Imagine a bank that wants to issue a tokenised deposit on a permissioned Besu network, settle a bond on a Corda ledger and accept a stablecoin on Ethereum. Each of those networks has its own node software, transaction format, signing scheme and failure modes. A bank's engineering team could integrate all three directly, but every new ledger would mean another integration, another set of keys and another audit.

Overledger replaces that with one API. The application sends a request in a common format; the gateway prepares the transaction for the target ledger, routes it through a signing service, submits it and tracks the result. Quant's FAQ describes it as "an API-based technology which is simple to incorporate into any existing system that works with APIs", and that framing has been stable since the product was announced in December 2017.

Over time the product family grew around the gateway. Overledger Platform, launched on 27 June 2023, added a low-code interface with "flows" for issuing tokens, bridging and deploying smart contracts. Overledger Authorise, launched on 10 October 2023, added bank-grade key management using hardware security modules and multi-party computation. Quant Flow, announced in May 2025, packages programmable-money features for banks using a domain-specific language called PayScript. QuantNet, announced in September 2025, is described as a programmable settlement network. And Fusion, live since 2 June 2026, is a rollup execution layer that Quant calls Layer 2.5. Each is covered on the ecosystem page.

Overledger's job is translation: one request in, the right transaction format out for each connected ledger.

What QNT is used for

QNT has three jobs, two of them long-standing and one new.

The oldest is the licence. On 10 December 2021 Quant announced an annual Overledger licence of £100 for every live-platform customer and developer, payable in QNT, with the test platform left free. Quant's current FAQ says you can "pay your platform fee in USD, or you can subscribe with QNT", and its terms describe QNT as a utility token customers may use for Quant products and services. The widely repeated claim that licence QNT is locked for twelve months comes from Quant's 2020 Overledger Network paper and third-party summaries; Quant's present site does not state a lock period, so this site treats it as a historical design rather than a confirmed current rule.

The second job is payment for gateway operators within the Overledger Network design of 2021, where operators licensed in QNT and were paid through treasury-managed payment channels. The community-treasury contract that supported this is now archived on GitHub, which suggests the model has been superseded rather than expanded.

The third job is the newest. On the Fusion rollup QNT is the designated token for gas and execution fees, and Trusted Node operators are expected to stake QNT to process transactions and earn rewards. As of November 2026 the public parameters of that staking programme are not published, and several trackers still list it as upcoming. The staking page keeps the current status; the tokenomics page explains the supply and distribution behind it.

What QNT does not give you

It is worth being explicit. QNT carries no governance vote, no dividend, no revenue share and no equity in any Quant entity. The Blockworks token-transparency filing that Quant submitted in July 2026 states that the project operates only through for-profit companies, has no foundation or DAO, and that Quant Network Ltd controls the protocol as corporate operator. Holding QNT is a bet that demand for Overledger access and Fusion usage will exceed the supply available on exchanges, nothing more.

How Overledger works, at a high level

The 2018 whitepaper described four layers: a transaction layer that holds the ledger-specific logic, a messaging layer that extracts information from transactions, a filtering and ordering layer that applies application rules, and an application layer where the business logic lives. That model still explains what the gateway is doing even though the implementation has moved on considerably.

In the current stack Quant describes three components with distinct jobs. Overledger "connects": it is the interoperability layer with the connectors and the API. QuantNet "establishes trust": it is the programmable settlement network. Fusion "controls": it is the multi-ledger rollup where execution happens. A developer touches the first through docs.overledger.dev, whose API groups include RPC, deposits, contracts, stakes, nodes, networks, flow sessions, swaps, withdrawals and a tracker.

Which ledgers it reaches

Quant does not maintain a static marketing list of supported chains. The developer documentation says self-serve connectors are available for the EVM family, Solana, Cosmos, SUI, Hedera and Aptos, while operator-gated or permissioned networks such as XRPL, Stellar and Bitcoin are enabled through a project engagement. Historically documented mainnets include Ethereum, Polygon, Avalanche C-Chain, XDC, Polkadot, Bitcoin and the XRP Ledger, plus Hyperledger Fabric, Besu and Corda on the permissioned side. Fusion's launch claimed 74 connected networks without publishing the list. The Overledger page goes deeper into the request lifecycle, and the interoperability page compares the gateway model with protocol-level alternatives.

Who built it

Quant was founded by Gilbert Verdian, a cybersecurity executive whose career ran through government roles at HM Treasury, the Cabinet Office and the Ministry of Justice, a stint as chief information security officer at NSW Health in Australia, and the security of the UK's payment infrastructure at Vocalink, the Mastercard-owned company behind Faster Payments. In 2015 he proposed blockchain standards work to the International Organization for Standardization, which led to the creation of technical committee ISO/TC 307; he describes himself as convenor of its interoperability working group, and the committee published ISO/TS 23516, an interoperability framework, in March 2026.

The company that became Quant Network Ltd was incorporated in London on 28 September 2015 under the name Remitt Ltd and renamed in June 2017. A Swiss entity in Zug issued the token in 2018. Verdian remains chief executive and the only active director on the UK register. The full chronology, including the token sale, the Overledger releases and the bank programmes, is on the history page.

Who uses Quant

The honest list of customers with primary-source evidence is short but notable, and it has grown fastest in the last two years.

Beyond banks, Oracle's Blockchain Platform Digital Assets Edition, launched in February 2025, integrates Quant technology, and Oracle certified Overledger on its cloud back in 2021. Earlier relationships with SIA (now Nexi) and LACChain produced interoperability tests rather than ongoing deployments. The partnerships page rates each one by the strength of the evidence; the CBDC page details the central-bank work.

What Quant is not

Not a blockchain

There is no Quant chain with its own consensus. Overledger is middleware; Fusion is a rollup that keeps execution data on a permissioned Besu network and posts state roots to other chains. Both are operated by Quant Network Ltd, which also acts as the Fusion sequencer. If someone offers you a "Quant node" to run at home, they are describing something that does not exist.

Not mineable, and not inflationary

QNT has no proof-of-work, no block rewards and no minting function. The contract was deployed in 2018 as a plain StandardToken with no owner privileges, which an independent review cited by Blockworks confirmed. The supply went down once, at the September 2018 burn, and has never gone up.

Not the meme coin

In November 2024 a child launched a Solana token called Gen Z Quant on Pump.fun, sold his holdings during a livestream and became an internet event when traders pumped the token in retaliation. Search engines now mix that story with the Ethereum token. They share four letters and nothing else. The legitimacy page covers the confusion and how to verify the real contract.

Not a stock

Since 4 June 2026 the Nasdaq symbol QNT has belonged to Quantinuum, a quantum-computing company. Quant Network Ltd is private. There is no Quant IPO, no QNT share and no way to buy the company on a stock exchange; the QNT stock vs token page explains what searchers usually mean.

Not a regulated financial firm

Quant Network Ltd is not authorised by the Financial Conduct Authority and is not on the FCA's cryptoasset register. Its only FCA footprint is as an agent of Yapily Connect for read-only account information services, effective July 2025. That is consistent with a software vendor that does not custody client money or run an exchange, but it means no regulator supervises the token.

Quant on Wikipedia and elsewhere

People often search for "quant coin wikipedia" and come away confused, because encyclopaedia-style summaries tend to describe Quant as a blockchain and quote the pre-burn 45 million supply from Etherscan. If you want a reference-grade source, the better options are Quant's own FAQ and news archive, the Companies House record for company 09798383, the Etherscan page for the token contract, and the Blockworks token-transparency filing, which Quant itself submitted and which flags the gaps it could not fill. Those are the documents behind every figure on this site, and they are listed under sources below.

For market data, the price page pulls live figures from a public API in your browser, and the transaction tracker shows recent transfers of the ERC-20 contract so you can see activity for yourself rather than trusting a screenshot.

Frequently asked questions

What does Quant coin do?

QNT pays for access to Overledger, Quant's API gateway for connecting applications to multiple blockchains, and since June 2026 it is the gas token on the Fusion rollup. It does not secure a blockchain of its own and confers no governance rights.

Is Quant a good project for developers?

If you need to reach several ledgers from one codebase and prefer an API to running nodes, yes. The sandbox is free, the developer hub is public, and self-serve connectors cover EVM chains, Solana, Cosmos, SUI, Hedera and Aptos. Older SDK repositories are archived, so start from the current docs.

Can I mine Quant?

No. QNT is an ERC-20 token with a fixed supply of 14,612,493. There is no mining, no inflation and no proof-of-stake consensus. The only planned staking is for KYC-verified Trusted Node operators on Fusion, with terms not yet published.

Who created Quant?

Gilbert Verdian, a former government and payments-infrastructure security executive who initiated the ISO/TC 307 blockchain standards committee in 2015. He incorporated the company in London that year and remains its chief executive.

Is Quant the same as the Quant meme coin on Solana?

No. Gen Z Quant was a Pump.fun token launched in November 2024 with no link to Quant Network. The only genuine QNT contract is on Ethereum at 0x4a220E6096B25EADb88358cb44068A3248254675.
